How to write a delivery driver CV

You can download our example CV by clicking ‘Price: Free Download’ above. This template gives you a great starting point for your own delivery driver CV.

Sections and layout

Your delivery driver CV needs to have the following basic sections:

  • Name, address, phone number and email address
  • Profile, setting out why you’re suitable for the role (based on the job advert)
  • Work history
  • Qualifications

You can also include a hobbies and interests section if you want to. This can incorporate hobbies that prove you have some of the required skills, such as teamwork (5-a-side football in our example) and good physical health (attending the gym).

You’ll notice that the layout of our example is a little different to a standard CV.

  • We’ve created a more extensive profile section – usually this would be just 3 – 4 sentences.
  • We’ve put the qualifications before the work history.

The reason for these two choices is because the candidate has no directly relevant past experience in a similar role. Many delivery driver jobs do not require directly relevant work experience. Instead, the recruiter wants to know you have the required skills, which may have been acquired through other types of experience. If you do have experience as a driver, we would suggest swapping around the qualifications and work history sections in our example CV layout, so that the employer sees your relevant experience first.

Tailoring to the job advert the job advert

Some job adverts have very specific requirements which might include driving experience. For example:

  • A good level of driving experience, plus a full, clean C1 driving licence to legally drive a vehicle of 7.5 tonnes or over.
  • Experience in a similar customer-facing role would be a definite plus.
  • Ability to work flexibly, methodically and under pressure.
  • Self-starting, team player with a friendly, can-do attitude.
  • Customer focus, pride in appearance (we have guidelines), professional approach.
  • Either own or be prepared to get a digital tachograph card.

If you are responding to an advert like this one, it’s essential to deal with the key requirements in your profile, and reiterate how you meet the requirements throughout your CV. If you don’t have previous formal driving experience but your past roles have included lots of travelling, make sure you mention this.

Skills

Not all job adverts are as specific as the example above, and as noted, recruiters for this role do not typically require directly relevant experience. However, they will want to know that you have a range of key skills which won’t always be listed off in the job advert, such as:

  • Customer service skills
  • Organisation
  • Teamwork
  • Thorough, attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Communication skills
  • Basic IT skills

Mentioning these skills on your CV is not enough. You’ll need to explain how you have acquired/used them – which might be through formal work experience, hobbies (such as sports coaching), volunteering, community projects or even personal achievements.

If you don’t have directly relevant work experience, draw on the skills you used in your previous roles which are transferable to the job, such as customer service, organisation skills, use of IT or the ability to work under pressure. If you had to drive as part of your previous jobs, this is also worth mentioning – even if the recruiter has stated that no experience is necessary.

Additional requirements

Think about what you would need to be a successful delivery driver. A typical daily routine might include:

  • Collecting parcels from a pick-up point
  • Planning your route (typically using a GPS device)
  • Loading up your vehicle in a sensible order to match your route
  • Contacting customers along the way and updating tracking systems
  • Making deliveries, talking to customers and sometimes obtaining signatures
  • Keeping track of your mileage and fuel expenditure
  • Updating delivery records
  • Returning undelivered items

To be able to execute all of the above, you’ll need all of the skills listed above and in addition,

  • A driving licence (often recruiters specify the maximum number of points they will allow, e.g. 6).
  • A spacious car or van in good working condition with insurance.
  • Confident driving skills – number of years is relevant, more is a bonus.
  • The right to work in the UK.
  • No unspent criminal convictions – usually recruiters will do a basic DBS check.
  • Good physical health and the ability to heavy lift, including loading and unloading the contents of your vehicle.
  • Flexible and teamwork – often you’ll be working with other drivers who you will rotate shifts with and provide holiday cover for.
  • The recruiter may require that you are above the age of 25 for insurance purposes.

Try to cover as many of these requirements in your profile. You’ll usually send your CV digitally (e.g. by uploading it or attaching it to an email) which means recruiters will read it digitally. Digital documents are generally read in an ‘F’ pattern, so the profile section is the prime area for setting out how you meet the requirements of the job.
